We have considerable experience in handling complex estates and assets.

Mr. Borst’s practice is devoted entirely to family law, where he has had considerable success for both male and female clients in negotiating settlement agreements and litigation. He is well-regarded by his colleagues and bench officers alike. His practice also includes mediation and collaborative law.
Mr. Borst’s passion is to help clients define their goals and set achievable expectations so that he can devote his considerable amount of skills in helping his clients achieve those expectations.
Mr. Borst finds that clients appreciate an understanding of the alternatives for resolving their divorce case. He is mindful of the bottom line and helps clients make decisions from a cost/benefit perspective.
Mr. Borst prefers to resolve issues for his clients outside of court, if possible. In this way clients are best able to maintain control over their lives and the outcome of the issues in their divorce. That control helps to reduce the anxiety and financial cost attendant to the divorce process itself.
Where litigation is needed, Mr. Borst’s twenty-nine years of courtroom experience provide strong and effective advocacy of the client’s positions and the best interests of the children.
Rounding out Mr. Borst’s team are his office administrator of twenty-eight years, Betsy Gordon, and his paralegal, Heather Barker, who just celebrated her seventeenth anniversary with the firm.
A native of the Bay Area, Mr. Borst was admitted to the California State Bar in 1988. He received his B.A. Degree in German from the University of California at Berkeley and graduated with Honors from Golden Gate University School of Law in 1988, where he served as an Editor of the Law Review.
Mr. Borst has been an active member (current Treasurer and past Steering Committee member) of the local collaborative practice group (now Collaborative Practice East Bay) and a member of The International Academy of Collaborative Professionals since 2004. Mr. Borst regularly serves as Settlement Commissioner in both Alameda and Contra Costa Counties and has been a member of our three local bar associations for the last 29 years: Contra Costa County, Alameda County, and Eastern Alameda County. He has served on the Board of The Eastern Alameda County Bar Association from 1994-present and is also a Past President (1999). He previously served on the Board of Directors at his daughter’s school for four years, where he has enjoyed the challenges and rewards of that experience. You can often find Mr. Borst cycling in the East Bay hills on the weekend.
